If you can't afford vaj-bob, as my friends and I like to call him, then you'll need to get a different strategy. It may miss the timing, but you get him out, and he can be boosted with mastery, which I only just realized you don't run. Did you mention it in your OP? I don't remember what you said about it and I don't really want to look through it all again just to find out. (it was a good read, but not twice in one day lol)
I don't play competitively, so maybe that's why I can run primus at 1 and aklys at 3 and mastery at 2 and still have fun.
mastery is slow, the 500 boost is easily displaced, and equipping them from the hand has no use outside of militum, who is essentially the poor-man's dux+phalanx.
actually, if you're not keen on dropping $100+ for an extra deck, go ahead, play 3 aklys, 3 militum instead of 3 dux 3 phalanx.
militum essentially has the same use as dux in this case.
use mastery only as a supplement, not your main deal (0-2 recommended)
because you may be playing militum, you can consider using 3 legionnaire, as well as gae bulg, who can banish your spent militums to create a nigh-indestructible 3700 beater.
for aklys+primus pilus to be viable, you need to get rid of the aklys before it becomes an equip.
since you appear to like going the L7 route, you can have some torrentials and other things to remove monsters while getting a free dragunity summon from the hand.this ruling given by The Detonator
appears to prove that this is allowed, but i wouldn't be 100% certain until someone confirms this.
